Toyota has led the Australian new-car market to an all-time monthly record of more than 108,000 vehicles, according to official figures released today.

The industry has also moved back above one million sales for the financial year to June 30, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' VFacts data shows.

June's record of 108,722 deliveries lifted the 2009-10 financial year result to 1,013,273 - only the third time the industry has surpassed one million in the July-June period.

For the financial year, Toyota sold 214,228 cars and trucks - the most of any company - for a market share of 21.1 per cent. In June 2010, Toyota sold 21,257 vehicles - more than 7,400 sales ahead of its nearest rival.

Toyota remains the only carmaker ever to sell 20,000 vehicles in a single month. It is also the sole company to achieve 200,000 sales in any 12-month period.

The company's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the automotive industry in 2010 had consistently outperformed other retail sectors.

"Sales have picked up in the mining industry and among rental fleets, while private buyers have also returned to the market, aided by improved economic conditions and strong competitive retail offers," Mr Buttner said.

"In addition, there has also been a sizeable contribution this year from the second of the Federal Government's investment allowance bonuses," he said.

So far this year, Toyota's Camry sales have risen 35 per cent with the introduction of the Australian-built Hybrid Camry.

Toyota's Prado is the country's best-selling SUV and HiLux is the best-selling light-commercial vehicle.

LandCruiser 200 series, HiAce van and HiAce bus are also the leaders in their respective segments.

"The success of Hybrid Camry is important for our manufacturing operations in Melbourne and for the availability of advanced technology to Australian motorists," Mr Buttner said.
